From major metropolitan cities to quiet suburbs, many women have to modify their everyday behaviors in order to simply feel "safe". This burden placed on women to protect themselves when out and about has resulted in their need to carry weapons from keys to knives. As a man, an innocent " Be careful" from a friend can be taken for granted but for some women, it takes on a totally different meaning. For women simply being careful takes a lot of mental preparation, stress, and energy. Being in a constant state of situational awareness can be and is exhausting. According to The National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 81% of women reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime. " These numbers are alarming, to say the least. WIth my project, " Being Careful: Carrying More Than Just A Burden" I strive to bring awareness and understanding to the omnipresent fear that women have when out in the world by sharing the stories of women from several different backgrounds all for the right to feel safe in their own bodies. Free of becoming a victim. Free of being catcalled. Simply free to be.
